Total Expenditure

This chart shows per pupil total school district expenditure for the independent school districts and for New York City. Each quintile represents one-fifth of the students in independent school districts in New York State. The deciles are grouped from the first or wealthiest to the tenth or least wealthy. Notice that total expenditure in the wealthiest quintile is nearly 50 percent higher than expenditure in the least wealthy quintile and nearly sixty percent higher than expenditure in New York City where 40 percent of New York State’s students are enrolled in school. The funding difference between New York City and the rest of the state is amplified by the fact that New York is in a high cost region and has a high concentration of students with special needs.
