EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN AGAINST VOUCHERS
Improve, Don't Abandon, Our Public Schools
All children
deserve good schools.
We are New Yorkers--parents, teachers, civic and religious leaders--who
want all 1.1 million city public school children to have an opportunity
to learn at the highest levels, to succeed and to become contributing
members of the community. Taxpayer-funded vouchers divert precious public
dollars from the many to the few.
Vouchers don't
raise achievement.
Smaller classes, well-prepared teachers, up-to-date learning materials
and a safe learning environment do. Class size reductions in Tennessee,
Indiana, San Francisco, and "turnaround" public schools in New
York did far more than voucher experiments in Milwaukee and Cleveland
to raise the scores of low-income students.
The Emergency Campaign Against Vouchers
opposes any voucher proposal for the City of New York.
Creating a voucher program citywide would drain millions of dollars from
our public schools. This is no time to siphon
off money and attention from the task of improving all of our public schools.
Moreover, public funds should not be used to send our city's children
to religious or other private schools.
Our public schools are working hard to prepare students for higher academic
standards, tough exams, and new graduation requirements. They need investments
in proven programs that will help all children succeed. SAY NO TO VOUCHERS.
MAKE ALL SCHOOLS GOOD SCHOOLS.
